When do you need an air dehumidifier?

An air dehumidifier removes excess moisture from the indoor air. It prevents mold, rot, and bad odors, and provides a better indoor climate. Many people use air dehumidifiers in basements, bathrooms, laundry rooms, boats, or garages. Others place it in the living room to dry clothes faster and get fresher air. If you have high humidity or condensation on your windows, an air dehumidifier is the solution.

Temperature

Where the dehumidifier will be placed is very important.

If you are going to use it in cold rooms such as a basement, boat, or garage, choose a dehumidifier with a desiccant rotor. It works best in low temperatures.
If you are going to use an air dehumidifier at normal indoor temperatures, you can choose a condensate dehumidifier, also known as a compressor dehumidifier. It is suitable for heated homes, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.

Capacity and size

It's not the number of square meters that determines the size of the air dehumidifier, but how much moisture needs to be removed. A small family produces less moisture than a large active family. Showers, laundry, and cooking increase the need.

Small home, 1–2 people: approx. 10 liter dehumidifier
Small home, 2–3 people: approx. 12 liter dehumidifier
Large home, family: approx. 20 liter dehumidifier
Large home, active family with a lot of laundry or low temperature: approx. 25 liter dehumidifier

A small dehumidifier that works all the time often uses just as much power as a larger air dehumidifier that works less. If in doubt, choose a slightly larger model. If you are sensitive to noise, choose a smaller one.

Very generally, we can say that a small family in a small apartment needs a 10-12 liter dehumidifier, while an active family in a large apartment or single-family home should have an air dehumidifier of 20-25 liters per day. If in doubt, you should choose a larger one. If you are sensitive to noise, you should choose a smaller one. The power consumption is often approximately the same. A small dehumidifier that works a lot uses as much power as a large dehumidifier that works less.

Modern air dehumidifiers can do much more than just remove moisture.
